I'm an evil person and I'm sure I will pay for taunting friends and relatives with descriptions of the spring weather here. While they live in the mid-West or on the East coast and are still suffering from below freezing point temps and snow storms, I am enjoying the arrival of spring.
My peas and lettuce are coming up! Woohoo! I'm glad I put row covers on them though, because while our temps are generally warmer, we have had the occasional frost, hard rain, and hail storm. I don't mind hail as long as I'm inside. One big difference between hail and snow is that snow is generally silent. Not only does it fall softly and silently but it has a muffling effect on all noises during a storm. Not so hail. Hail can make your car a tin drum with you stuck inside, drowning out your radio and any thoughts in your head. Making literal the idiom that you can't hear yourself think. Sheesh!
But apart from the near constant rain, occasional frost and hail storm the weather here really is lovely. The forcythia, grape hyacinth and daffodils are all blooming. I just planted some pansies to brighten up the beds (and cut down on the weeds). I also spent some time today cleaning up the greenhouse in preparation for starting seedlings. Sadly, it looks like I had an infestation of mice in the greenhouse over the winter. All the old seeds and bulbs I left out there have been eaten, along with some of the Cory's Snail Bait. I wonder if snail poison has any effect on mice?
I've been wondering all winter why we suddenly had so many cats visiting our yard! If I'm lucky they have solved the mice problem for me already. If not, I've left a couple of peanut butter loaded traps in the greenhouse.
I've been doing a lot of trimming of dead limbs and weeding and the yard really looks nice. Now if I would just get around to fertilizing and mulching. A garden is never done, but for a gardener that's actually a good thing.
