Our customers seem to come in waves and I assume it is because they are all at lunch, off work, or out of school at the same time. But a few of our customers only come in after they've gotten drunk enough, which for some is about the noon hour.
One drunk often comes in reeking of tobacco smoke (I am very allergic to tobacco), which disguises the smell of liquor and possibly b.o., although I don't think he's clever enough to do this intentionally.
So to avoid an allergy reaction I try not to breath his fumes, but it is very difficult to avoid breathing while still trying to talk. Try it sometime and see how many sentences you can get through before you have to come up for air. There's no rushing the encounter either. Trying to teach a drunk how to use the library catalog is not a quick task. Not to mention frustrating, he finally told me that it wasn't a good time for him to learn something.
I should say not!
